thing you can't buy i buy anything I want basically but I can't buy time and so to have time is the most pressing you can have it I better be careful with us there's no way I will be able to buy more time and living in Omaha makes that easy that makes it a lot easier I 450 whatever things it's it's well done for 54 years I spent five minutes going each way now just imagine that was a half an hour each way yeah I know the words a lot more songs and that's about it it has no don't get it really has no if you're doing an hour a day difference coming and going and you know you good that's two and a half percent of the person's word week yeah that means 40 here's you're talking about a year it's 35 years ago and believe me that that does not strike somebody that's working 40 hours a week and trying to support a couple kids on it and finding you know the their income is remain the same or be yes or a just aren't participating they have threatened by forces they can't compensate that they can't the market system just pays more and more just just saying say your of junior middleweight boxer you know I mean in the 30s you were limited though you know you wouldn't even get on the undercard at Madison Square Garden and it was limited but then television comes along and cable comes along a pay-per-view and tens and tens of millions of dollars so it's the top it's terrific but if you're the 45th best middleweight in the country it's pretty much the same as it used to be in the 30 so the spread gets wider if you're Frank Sinatra you're a lot better off if you've got television as you just play as I'm theater in a New York like where you started you know it it's magnified but throughout I mean if you've got a good business idea you can get a capitalized and become more billion he's just on the idea so it it's just tougher whereas you know you go back to 1800 a doer if you were reasonably strong and willing to work hard you were worth ninety percent as much on a farm is the very best guy you know it just the differential and it will keep widening the market system will push it in that direction but its government is there does what would you change if I could well I would change the Earned Income Tax Credit big time yeah I just you know I I am where I am not by myself at all I mean there's 320 million Americans out there and there's a lot of crosses over Normandy and everything else you know but and it just I benefit enormously by having come along when I came along and where I came along hand and some people did and some people didn't and there's nothing wrong with a marking system that rewards anybody that makes life better for millions of people I want to get the enormously rewarding but you got to take care of the people that just don't fit well into that particular niche I mean if this country paid all based on athletic ability you know I mean I could I can study eight hours a day and you know Apple he's go ahead you know I'm still gonna you know I'll get the ring or something I got ten seconds later i'm on my back you know so it is the talents to get rewarded a market system are important because they bring us more of the goods and services as a country wants and they make all kinds of improvements and how we live just incredible but they lead lead people behind and it won't be solved simply by education you want everybody did and is it the responsibility of government to do something about her this you know the average person today lives better than John T rockville did when he was alive that is true the richest man in the world yeah yeah that's better he looks yeah your little better and then in terms of your entertainment choices your travel choices up Johnny couldn't buy them you know I made and that was that's in one lifetime that's it it's amazing what brings you the most satisfaction beyond family well most criticized back she's just taking good help what your 86 I'm a good look at this a little liver so you you're in good health oh yeah I mean I enjoy every day I enjoy and what is it that you enjoy well enjoy running Bircher I mean if you get right down with the device and psyche I mean this one I want ya know is it's it's you know it it's been my painting for 50-some years I get to paint what I want I don't have to I don't have to do you know follow it Wall Street just telling me to do in that quarter or something I got so I own the brush I own the canvas and the campus is unlimited and that's a it's a pretty game and I get to do it every day with people I like I don't have to i don't have to associate with anyone that causes my stomach to turn you know if I were in politics I'd have to smile a lot of people that I want to hit you so I'd go to them it's really I've got a good deal on but I'm hanging on to it I often repeated this or brooke astor wednesday to me i spent too much of my life worrying about what people thought of me and then i only care about what I think of them it was good to see people that I like yeah and my business is I'm lucky that way I mean this business is so much easier than philanthropy trying to be maybe a whole lot more important but in business you're looking for kind of easy choices you're looking for people that you can that you like to associate with and I mean you're to an extent i can create the world around me saying i mean if somebody walked in your door and they offer they want you to buy their company and you saw it as a golden golden goons from my with a farmer yeah i would say no you say no big even though you knew it would Charlie marrying for money is probably a bad idea under any circumstances but if you're already rich it does not make any sense at all but the satisfaction I mean what's Demetric of satisfaction and its really doing a decent job of running a place that knew that it's harder to do because the size but over time but it's it's it's working with a whole lot of people on interesting it's like gene McCarthy said I think about being a football coach it I mean it's just difficult enough to make it interesting the radius of that hard yeah it was yeah well we had a way of getting like a little irritated sometimes I would say this to Charlie out now at 86 i mean i i've seen a lot of people have gotten over and I've never seen anybody that is 70 or picking pickin age who felt good about their children that felt bad about their lives and all my experience I mean I've and you've never seen anybody who felt good about the children it also felt bad about their layout and I've seen plenty of people lots of money that where it hasn't worked out well in the family and you feel good about that trend well are the children didn't feel good about them and I mean whichever way I mean but it was it they failed at the most important teaching job they have and personal relationship and and sometimes it happens for extraneous reasons but but I would I really have never met anybody regardless of their economic circumstances who thought our life was a failure thought they'd maybe if there have been children head back on they love their children and the children were doing there absolutely I felt good about what that you know that brought him into the world one night a young and it felt like they asked himself so that yeah I'd one soul was extraordinarily rich he put a lot of money in this kid's name he didn't didn't want them to have any control over and once a year he would have dinner with him and trying to get him to sign their income tax return it blank now just imagine that you know with this case for kids none of them wanted then have enough confidence in them or that it's just crazy I'm Anna days he would warm during this dinner and they knew exactly what was going on at once a year and the you know and then he bribe them sort of to sign their income tax return in line so he could file and they wouldn't know what they had I mean that when you have a dojo I've seen just time after time when people been successes I've seen plenty of the other two but but success is it does this a failure and I don't think they feel like good about life what is it that you to share what makes this friendship so satisfying for both of these well I think we both certainly share a curiosity about the world and we come from two different but related worlds so we had it would probably spent about 10 hours of this one hour visit that bill was scheduled unja life s 1991 his mother had the market then do it and we weren't half way I mean we've got no place in terms of our eventual agenda just in that time in fact it the governor of Washington came by and bills that had to come into the bedroom fullest possible cylinders we were talking about it's what we have fun to start with I mean that every relationship should have a lot of fun in it and and we find the world in just such an interesting place so we like to compare notes on it with him compare notes we have a lot of fun doing he believed in America absolument you know you have said to me more than once I would give up a year of my life just to know what the next 50 is going to be like yeah even the next for now I mean why'd you pick for number the game to me yeah yeah it is just fascinating what's happened just in my lifetime it was in the eighty-six years I i should mention one thing about reading it was at the library here at combien I wish I spent probably more time than this any other soon I lived there practically but and I pulled the book out there have to be who's in American it told me something about my professor Benjamin Graham and then I looked up and I went to the library and I said I want to look more learn more about this because I learned this over here that changed my whole life you know we own guy go down because of a bit librarian directing me there's some other book and then following through on that night it's the chance I i read about one-fifth the pace that bill does but still spend five or six hours a day reading I mean it just you can learn so much i particularly love biography just to be able live the lives of these people live Ben's excited see I'm so extraordinary the lessons of the you know the discouragements they say it's just everything about it so I did you can't get enough of reading that and I read the book when I was 19 called the intelligent investor and I'd I had been interested in investments since I was maybe seven or eight but I never and I'd read every book the public no more public library but why do you think you were interested in investing when you were seven or eight because I was too dumb to get interested in for my dad my dad had a very small investment firm and I was just good i read all the books that he had there waiting to go to lunch or whatever it might be and then i went to the public library men of all and it just was a fascinating subject to me and and but i didn't have any I I knew what everybody thought all of that at an early age but the Graham wrote made sense to investing per se did is there something about your core competence that made investing the perfect place for you to be yeah it certainly would be a pro football player I mean I looked it was a question of zeroing out all the other incumbents I was left with one thing you know how I just allocation yeah it's I was actually wired in a way that was this would be something I would be good at what so what wyd in what way I I can't tell you precisely but I I've got the right temperament for it which is more important than IQ have you got more than other 20 points in IQ so sell the rest is somebody else you don't need is investments but you do need the right temperament you do it you do have to be able to think for yourself and getting back to you know it the earlier question the first question I asked myself when I look at the businesses you know is it important and easy what I can determine about those businesses and a lot of them don't make it now bill is looking for your hard questions that that plagued society and we're intellect and money may make a difference they may not for a while and but he's taking on the tough things I think my job is to find easy things I'm looking for one foot bars to step over you know rather than eight foot bars to jump over and but that's not irrational if you're if you're looking at the investment universe but reading is kia's on the biography on the on the book thing I does you can learn so much My partner Charlie Munger just loves Ben Franklin you know I mean I mean you like it you can learn from other people and their mistakes and I find me a biography of my favorite wine you have often said still tap dance to work attitude you can paint with your own colors yeah I I get I'm as excited about tomorrow in terms of what going to happen as I was when I started I was having a lot of fun when I started but I'm having just as much fun now and and I was when I'm here cumbia terrible theorem I was impossible for me to speak in public I mean I wasn't able to do it I actually read it hadn't hear times I went down to midtown signed up for a course gave the guy had checked and then stop payment on the check I mean it just a dis petrified but finally I and actually after you get through here hearing me today maybe or which I just ate afraid of public speaking but that's another question then when I got out to all my life I decided I just had to do it so I gave a guy a hundred dollars in cash and once I part of another dollars in cash I I jump off the ground can do they get my money's worth so is it but it ain't it changed my life but I would say this don't fear failure almost everything that's turned out I got turned on by Harvard to the best thing ever happened among other some good things that happen is it seems that at the time don't worry about and don't don't let it eat as you look back just keep going because you're going to have some things and forgot him go forward I would go to the back of the roommates back there wherever number three is hi my name is Matthew man I'm a first year at Columbia Business School both of you had a moment where you went out on your own and I guess my question would be if you were to do it all over again you're in our shoes what industry would that be in where would you start your own business today I didn't say that yeah for one thing I'd be a failure to anything else probably of it no I mean I've had I had fun one is in my 20s my 30s now I'm 86 I'm having fun as to it I I advise students as much as possible look for the job that you would take if you didn't need a job I mean don't sleepwalk through life and don't don't say it's all going to be great you know I'll do this and I'll do that and you know I'm just marking time doesn't to be over that I've told people that's like saving up sex for your old age I mean it just is not a success in it it is not a good idea yeah yeah what are you urging them to do I'll explain it just what I'm talking about diet it just yeah you really want to be doing what you love doing it and you can't necessarily find it on your first job right but don't give up before you find it many industrial based communities have been severely affected with higher levels of unemployment due to the increasing utilization of automation which ends up displacing workers what do you believe that what do you believe is a possible solution to unemployment arising from automation how technology and the impact technology is having on jobs and and the demand for new kinds of skills yeah we were here at 1800 and conducting this and somebody would point out that eventually tractors would come along and and better fertilizer and that eighty percent of the people are now employed on the farm and in a couple hundred years it's going to be two or three percent and what are we going to do with all these people will the answer is we release them we came to know something about it in something called essays on persuasion and he wrote a nineteen thirty about what a more prosperous society would become like and he actually postulated that in a hundred years and we're now 87 years within them that there would be four to eight times as much output per capita and remarkable but he didn't quite get how it might get distributed but the idea of more output per capita is what the progress is made on productivity that that should be harmful the scientist is crazy i mean the distribution may be a problem but if one person could push a button and turn out everything we turn out now is that good for the heads of the world you have to figure out how to distribute it but but you'd free up all kinds of possibly for everything else so you every everything should be devoted initially to getting greater productivity but people who fall by the wayside through no fault of their own as the goose lays more golden eggs should still get a chance to participate in that cost per me and that's where government comes in whether you're going to make an investment in a company or whether you can abide a company what are the factors that you have to be that you're looking for what test I'm looking for durable competitive advantage i'm looking for something that has a moat around it for a considerable period of time and i'm looking for an honest and able management Toronto because I don't how to run it myself and I'm looking for a purchase price that's not excessive but it's better to pay a little too much for something that's a very good business than it is to buy some bargain but believe that company but not much in the future and I don't know i don't have a ability to predict to the highest high probability of success to future most companies so i'm looking for the exception and the nice thing is that there's thousands of companies out there and you only have to be right on a couple I mean it's exactly the opposite of baseball where you have called strikes and the picture is trying to throw it to the worst part of the strike zone for you and if he succeeds in getting into that corner three times and you don't swing your out and investing it's a no it's an old called strike things I can sit there all day and somebody conforming one company after another and finally I got into my sweet spot both of you have chosen both wives and partners well Charlie Munger added what Charlie Munger changed my goose early he'd be fine damn in a huge way in terms of looking for the quality companies and and looking for the ability to make an investment that would work out well for 5 or 10 or 20 years as opposed to something might there might be one I call it cigar by the investing but it was one puff left in the cigar but the cigar was free so you picked up these disgusting looking things and got one top bottom and went on to another one and that worked okay but it was small scale and it really doesn't build something satisfying so so he he kept forcing me in the direction of saying you know is this video business we want home for forever and we want to get a so it's like a marriage I mean you want to get associated with this person forever and it's a great way to look at things it's more fun with a partner I mean Charlie and I've had more fun working together then neither one of us would have had individually and we have never had an argument after working together for 58 if you talk every day not anymore like because we know what the other guys going to say we just run my own personal thoughts is that every life is of equal value and in many ways in many ways if you have a look at the number of dollars you actually can do more for more people outside the United States if we do have greater resources here for our 320 million people then exists around the world for 7 billion people so if if you you can improve the lot of more people by intelligently spending a billion dollars or any other number in other areas of the world actually then here and i get no I coming from Omaha and having the money I have people can say well why not spend it all in normal you know you grew up here and almost done all kinds of things for your night absolutely knowledge that but in the end if i've got x dollars to spend that i can make life better for more people if I haven't intelligently allocated in other parts of the world actually than the United States and that draws a fair amount of criticism but you know I live with it because it's what I believe Oh lots of equal value is really the driving bully I mean I akan Dave I'm an accident I won the ovarium honoree when I was born in the United States in nineteen thirty it was 40 to 1 against me I was mailed that now it's 80 the one against being a male in the United States and nineteen thirty I was just plain lucky my life have been talking to Bill always said if I has been born a long time ago I'd have been some animals lunch because I can't run fast I can't climb trees and everything else and I'd be saying I allocating capital allocated on it wouldn't work and I was lucky but a 79 out of the 80 weren't as lucky as I was at that time to go back 100 150 years people got wealthy by making some money from the first oil refinery or still on mill and building another one that Henry Ford with bilbo plan to build cars and then he it would be from actually from retained earnings which eventually turned into cash now you can get rich marrying up just by having an idea and you can get that idea monetized and capitalized in a way that you cannot believe so we are particularly interested in getting younger people interested in flying because they there will be huge there are huge fortunes by people were now in their 20s and 30s and just think of what those the potential for that group and so this things worked out way way better including an integra vehicle to join us well are there any major life lessons that you two have learned through your personal experiences well it's a very important question and the more then you will move in the direction of the people that you associate with so I it's important associate with people that are better than yourself and actually the most important decision many of you may not all of you will be the spouse your choosing and you really you want to associate with people who are the kind of person you would like to be you'll move in that direction and the most important person by far in that respect is your spouse I can't overemphasize how important that is your right the friends you have they will form you as you go through life and make some good friends keep them for the rest of your life would have them be people that you admire as well as weikum you have said to me about Susie your late wife I was a mess until I met I think that's understating she changed my life I've either no question well I was a very lopsided not well-adjusted person who happen to be very good that's one thing and and she put me together I mean it wasn't it wasn't overnight either i mean but she just had this brakeman can you know and five as she saw fit as well coated coming together of opposites or no no I wouldn't say that we had we had very similar by we were in sync they in a very big way and and but I she was way more ago I wish he was 19 when I married I was 21 but I was about 12 emotionally ahead and she put me together and took him like I say it took time but that it changed my life I mean I would I would not have been a truffle anything like to live by that and what did Charlie Munger head well Charlie Munger my partner of 57 or 58 years and and he's extremely wise he's a wonderful friend we've been partners that time and he's strong minded I'm strong minded we disagree sometimes we have never had an argument in that whole time and we never will and I never had an argument I will I that's absolutely true we must disagree absolutely we disagree but so if you disagree how do you decide to well what he says at the end is when we disagrees as well warn you'll end up agreeing with him because you're smart if I'm right you know where do i attack that particular promise but an offer to you I'm going to figure out of my office off of these right on to say that no I I respect his opinion enormously whatever he gives it to very smart girls are bitches I mean it's but it's more fun doing things with partners so that mean the most fun is obviously a marriage partner and that's the most important relationship but what having having a business partner if I'd done everything I've done it when to work out this way but let's say I got double the results been more fun doing with Charlie I thought I would pile it up over the years then she would untie lit in terms of running a one very large foundation and I was particularly good at compounding money and therefore society would benefit by waiting are you interested in technology I don't have enough i don't think i have a natural event that way to start with and i'd be so far behind i never would catch up with people with that have been working on it and then they did it would not be a game i would be when I is a principal criteria for you understanding the business yeah I understand the business and there's lots of businesses that I don't understand some of them may be almost under understandable and others are just outside my fear of confidence but you do have people now that do have that kind of expertise were there you have brought in I have two people who themselves have different circles of competence but they are chosen because they have a different circle and there's a lot of overlap there's overlap between them and the important thing you know is not how it's nice to have a huge circle of competence much more important know where the where the limits are of it I was genetically blessed with a certain wiring that's very useful in a highly developed market system where there's lots of chips on the table and you know I happen to be good at that game Ted Williams wrote a book called the science of hitting and in it he had a picture of himself at bat and the strike zone broken into I think seventy-seven squares and he said if he waited for the pitch that was really in a sweet spot he would bat four hundred and if he had to swing at something on the Lord corner he would probably back to 35 and in investing I'm in a no called strike business which is the best business you can be and I can look at a thousand different companies and I don't have to be right on every one of them or even 50 of them so i can pick the ball I want to hit and the trick in investing is just to sit there and watch pitch after pitch go by and wait for the one right in your sweet spot and that people are yelling swing bumps ignore them there's a temptation for people to act far too frequently and stocks simply because they're so liquid over the years you develop a lot of filters but i do know when i call my circle comma so I stay within that circle and I don't worry about things that are outside that circle defining what your game is where you're going to have an edge is enormously important how do you find them it's interesting that I've got a call i'll be sitting thinking and I mean different different different things that in terms of buying private private businesses is because I got a call from a private seller but occasionally I just decide to act and and we never do anything unfriendly but in terms of my whole businesses and people who know you and it close to you on the lookout for you or not much it's unlikely Charlie we met more we've got about 12 billion of common stocks since the election now that's it oh that's uh it's in my mind which ones I pick now the guys that worked with me the two fellows I'd probably bought a little bit or so a little bit too but but those are just those are ideas that I've either committed from a different slant in some way or whatever it may be the difference between now and 60 or 70 years ago in the ability of really bright people really innovative really energetic people to get financed to do the things is it's just dramatically better than than it was at that time so now if you've got the ideas and the good ideas right in as crowded you've got energy it's far easier to get financed to move forward those ideas then you could 50 or 60 years that because the internet Oh crowdsourcing of what is it just lots more capital around and people more optimistic about the people are very optimistic but better ways to connect again and capital and that was a little bit is dramatic

Our nation was founded on conservatism, weather you like it or not.I only brought up the communism part because you assume that the more countries the better.Name one country that's liberal you fucking triggered snowflake.

Because it's unrealistic, just like communism

The Pareto distribution is a fact most people are terribly unproductive and about 20% of workers actually cause losses for their companies.

There is no self made man. They used other people and were lucky when they needed to be lucky. As Dr. House says " Every patient lie" , the same work for business man. Every business man lie. I actually read a study about 10 people that tried to start a certain business at the same town. They all did the same thingsย but only one was successful. No one could point outย what he did different.
